The plastic manufacturing industry is one I enjoyed working in, and my role was that of machinist. As an expert, I enjoyed playing this role in as many as three (3) different plastic manufacturing companies.
It is absolutely undeniable that today’s global village has grown to be so much dependent on the use of plastics. It is now a fact that several countries across the globe now have their economies thriving on the plastic manufacturing business and sale of plastic products. Can you identify any household that does not make use of any plastic product?
Let’s set the ball rolling! What was my role as a machinist? The machinist is just one of the team players. Others include mold makers and tool and die makers. Altogether we ensure the appropriate steps are undergone to produce the quality that customers desire. These steps include molding, plastic extrusion and plastic thermoforming.
As a machinist, I enjoyed operating as a jack of all trades. It was my responsibility to ensure that every device on site was functioning and operating in strict conformity to manufacturer’s specification. By this, I always had to make sure every machine was accurately programmed so as to produce the exact plastic part or component needed.
The machinist, who is usually a jack of all trades, will ensure that all of the devices are operative and functioning per the manufacturer's specifications. This includes ensuring that the programming of each machine is set to create the specific plastic part or component required. Because of the wide range of skills needed to adequately perform the job, prospective career entrants will need a strong understanding of mathematics and a firm ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
